“The difference of race is one of the reasons why I fear war may always exist; because race implies difference, difference implies superiority, and superiority leads to predominance.” One may ask why and how race, culture, or even ethnicity can seem to take the driver’s seat in one’s own life as well as in the lives of others. So many people will pass by and ignore the issue perpetually; then, there are those who are forever trapped on the bustling highway of prejudices. These are the “slaves” of the ignored issue that needn’t be ignored any longer. Many of them who have come before us have scripted their tales of horror; they recount every blow with the hope that someone will comprehend their pain. Upon reading these stories of the past, one finds that the strong feelings below the surface of every written and spoken word paint a picture of the effects of race, culture, and ethnicity on our everyday lives. “He was sitting in the rear of the car. I was sitting near the front of the car. I felt uncomfortable. While I’m usually anxious when I’m the only other person in an empty car, I felt especially so because the man was black.” Just as the woman felt on her ride home, many “whites” have come to believe in the “absence of race” and therefore become rather uneasy in positions where one is forced to notice the difference. A white man has the power to choose to ignore the idea of other races simply because white people are not the easy targets for prejudice.
