Life is like a yo-yo; it has its ups and downs. When we find ourselves stranded on the low end of life filled with despair and hardship, we often choose the panacea to all of our problems, admit defeat. In times of hardship and despair, it takes true courage and hope to fight through the negativity and come out victorious in the journey of life. Tom Joad, John Proctor, Biff Loman, and Antonia in the novels Grapes of Wrath, The Crucible, Death of a Salesman, and My Antonia, respectively, all displayed courage in their fight against the hardships in their lives, whether it was the courage to overcome hunger and poverty, the courage to find one’s own way in life, the courage to fight through misfortunes, or the courage to fight the system. In times when life seems hopeless, courage is the ultimate adversary against the despair, no matter what contretemps may plague life; courage will always be the antidote to all of life’s hardships. The Great Depression of 1929, which was characterized by the collapse of our economy and the mass migration into California due to the dust bowl, was a time of poverty, hunger, and mal-distribution of wealth. The Grapes of Wrath (set in the Great Depression), the protagonist, Tom Joad, experienced many difficulties such as imprisonment for self-defense and helping his family survive the Great Depression.
