Hypertension, diabetes type two, and high cholesterol are all usually diseases that affect overweight, middle-aged adults. Over the last two decades these diseases are now present in children. There are more overweight children in this generation than any other in history. One of every 5 children is considered overweight and one in every three overweight children are considered obese. (Scott, 1) Childhood obesity is affecting all races and genders in the United States. This is not only a problem in the United States, but also in several European countries and even Australia. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggest measuring the Body Mass Index (BMI) to identify obesity. The BMI is the ratio of weight to height. (AAP, 1) Many parents do not think their children are overweight and feel they will grow out of it but in reality overweight children usually become overweight adults. There are many factors that contribute to this epidemic. The main factor would be that children are not getting as much exercise as they need. Many children eat a lot to feed their growth spurt but they are not burning enough calories for the ones they take in.
