Brazilian Art of Capoeira And How It Has Progressed Through Time

The Brazilian Art of Capoeira, And How It Has Progressed Through Time

Through the years, many forms of martial arts, dancing arts and several other exercises came to be in which the human body was used to entertain by “copying the movements of animals” (Boca, 2003: Interview). ... In Africa, there are a lot of different types of dances, and cultural rituals some of which very much resemble Capoeira, such as the Kupugani Ingumi. In Brazil, there is Capoeira. Capoeira is a unique art in that involves movement, music, and elements of philosophy. Capoeira is practiced as a game, in which the two contestants get into a circle called a Roda, and “play.” Capoeira looks like a dance; it involves many graceful acrobatics, and evasive maneuvers. But at the same time, Capoeira mixes in many lethal attacks that strike in a flowing motion. ... Essentially, Capoeira was used as a form of self defense. Capoeira life involves its origins, struggles, where it is today, and the steps to becoming an effective Capoeirista.
Capoeira originally originated from the African slaves deported to Brazil. ... These Africans are what provided the greatest influence to the development of Capoeira. However, the true instigator of Capoeira is still a topic of great argument. There is an absence of written records or even an accurate oral tradition that would lead as far back as the true origin of Capoeira, but the three most popular beliefs are: Capoeira already existed in Africa; Capoeira was developed by slaves in the rural sections of Brazil; and Capoeira was created in Brazilian urban sections. African origins of the art are supported by the fact that there are arts in Africa which very much resemble Capoeira, such as the n’golo or zebra dance; or as the Portuguese Albano e Neves puts it “The n’golo is Capoeira” (Moura, 1980: 15-16). Young, fight oriented Capoeiristas however, would rather believe that Capoeira originated in the rural sections of Brazil.
