Tawny scanned the night sky. What if the Terror of the Living were to come that night to their desolate home? How long ago had she been born on Prabiuff – 14, 15 years ago? And here she was, holding a sword, maybe the only person to defend their world against the Terror! It had started only 6 months ago, but the past 6 months had seemed like an eternity. She had been living a fairly normal life with her parents, family, and friends. The morning had began as usual… “Go-o-o-d morning, Tawny Dawny” trilled Fawn, Tawny’s older sister. Tawny sighed and rolled out of bed. For a long time she had been trying to wake up first so SHE could wake Fawn up, but once again, Fawn had beat her to it. She quickly put on a soft purple dress and floated down the stone steps into the cocheros, the room where they dined. While they did not have the richest domain, they still lived rather elegantly, as her father worked for Dalagas, the ruler of Prabiuff. She ate her breakfast and then hurried outside. Looking back, she surveyed their house with its clean, white walls of stone. It was round in shape like a tower, but only tall enough for two floors and a slight rise of wall around the rooftop that served as a railing. The ground floor was where they ate, and engaged in social activities. The second floor was where they slept. The stairway started at the ground floor, went up to the second floor, and then continued on to the roof, which served as a lookout and a place for growing things. Sprays of green, white, and yellow shone on the roof from the many plants and herbs they grew up there in basins of clay. By now Tawny had reached the thick growth of trees, and as she entered it the trees closed around her, hiding her view of their house. She walked on until she reached a meadow. Walking through the soft grass, she reached a flat stone and seated herself. She inhaled deeply- she loved coming out in the fresh morning air. A quivering shriek interrupted her thoughts, wavering through the air and then collapsing back into the trees. She rose from her seat, but was suddenly jerked to the ground. Lying on her back, she found herself staring into the faces of a girl and a boy. “We got you!” they cried delightedly. Tawny got up and brushed her dress off, and then turned to the two “What on earth are you doing here, Veri? And why is Tas with you?” Veri, the girl, addressed Tawny with a giggle “We finally figured out a way to follow you without being seen, and we found your secret abode!” “She needed me to come along so she wouldn’t get lost.” Tas, Veri’s brother, said with a grin. “No, I wanted you along because you were the only one who knew how to follow Tawny without her knowing, seeing you track animals so much.” Veri replied. “So does this mean you have taken to tracking me like a wild animal?” said Tawny, pretending to be mortified. Veri and Tas laughed. “Seriously, though, we do have some thing we wanted to tell you.” Tas said. Veri nodded, sobering. Tawny looked at her two friends expectantly. “Well?” “We heard our parents talking last night,” Veri began, “and they were very disturbed. They said something about unfriendly undercurrents flowing towards Dalagas.” “Meaning,” broke in Tas, “somebody does not like Dalagas.” “So? What can one man do?” Tawny asked. “Apparently he is not the only one with such feelings, as others are helping him. Two days ago three men disappeared, and they all worked for Dalagas.
