Background theory on Chlorine Chlorine has a symbol of Cl. Chlorine is a greenish – yellow gaseous element. Chlorine was first isolated in 1774 by the Swedish chemist called Carl Wilhelm Scheele. He thought that chlorine was a gaseous compound but later in 1810 the British chemist Sir Humphrey Davy proved that chlorine was an element. In the periodic table chlorine is in-group 7 also known as the halogens. Halogens are salt formers. This is for all halogens to form salts with sodium. This is similar to the common salt (sodium chloride). These combine with metals to form halides. As well as metal and non-metals they form complex ions. Sources of Chlorine You would find chlorine in the manufactures of chlorinated organic chemicals.
