THE FIFTH SEASON
The fact that Dev Anand has always been a charmer of sorts is as unforgettable as the legendary filmmaker himself; but that was not always the case. Though Dev Anand formed a formidable trio along with Dilip Kumar abd Raj Kapoor through the 1950’s –1960’s, it could be argued by some that Anand was an outsider as compared to the other two. Though Dilip Kumar was a better actor and Raj Kapoor, the non-conformist Anand was definitely as popular with the masses as the other two. The fifth child of Pishorimal Anand, a famous lawyer and an active Congress worker, Dev Anand was born on September 26, 1923 in Gurdaspur, Punjab. After graduation from Government College Lahore Anand wanted to go abroad for further studies but his father couldn’t afford it as the family had just sent Anand’s elder brother Chetan to do his masters. Though dejected, Anand was not heart-broken and tried finding happiness in other dreams. A few months later Anand’s mother who was suffering from a serious throat infection passed away and things were never the same again. Her absence brought about major change in the house and for some time Dev was left playing nanny to younger siblings- two sisters and the youngest brother Vijay fondly called Goldie. This went on for a while and though Dev was not too happy with the responsibility he played along, as he knew this was just a passing phase.
It was during this time that Dev Anand started reading Baburao Patel’s Film India and reading the famous journalist ax down leading film stars to size fascinated the young man. A few weeks later Dev got to hear that Ashok Kumar was in Gurdaspur to attend the premiere of his film Bandhan.
