The American colomists were fine with the rule of Britain nad her authority over America. The colonists maintain loyalty and gratitude toward their mother country. Resentment was not present until the British started imposing taxes, which caused hatred toward the parliament of Britain. These taxes began as a regulation on commerce, but soon became internal taxes for British revenue. These taxes effected all of the colomies but most harshly the wealthy Northern and New England colonies. It was in the Northern and New England colonies that the elites (wealthy merchants, politcal leaders, and lawyers) resided. This was also the residence the Birtish centered their imposing taxes upon. These taxes effected the way America economically and politacally governed themselves. It were these taxes which, enflamed the colonists to begin to have the mindset of revolution. Through certain key figures and events, the elites made a conservative effort to preserve the current political and economic status in America through any means possible. America was fine with Britain until she started to put taxes on their country. The first step the elites took against these taxes were rebellion. The first tax that brought rebellion to the minds of colonists was the sugar act 1764. For most, the Sugar act complicated the ability to ship cololomial goods and stipulated that the colonists had to export commodies through Britain. It also discarded the traditioanl English protections for a fair trial. The Sugar Act allowed cases to be moved from colonial courts to vice admirality courts, where the judge decided the verdict. This act alarmed the elites of which it primarly effected because of the sacrafice of economic control they previously had in the colonies. The colonists had to go through Bitain instead of going directly to foreign ports as they had been doing. They aslo were denied the right to a traditional jury fair trrial. These restrictions and requirements created the first stipulation that the current economic and political status was going to fall. To further these beliefs of the elites, the British imposed the Stamp Act in 1765. The Stamp Act obliged colonists to purchase stamped paper for all documents, such as newspapers, contracts or other legal documents. People who failed to cooperate with the law were faced with prosecution in the viceadmirality courts.
