A Second Chance Maria Sanchez will never truly experience the oppression her Grandparents and parents went through while living in Mexico. Grandpa had gotten the mail. As he closed the front door he called out, “Son, Ladies, there’s important mail today.” Grandpa always referred to Grandma, his daughter-in-law, and granddaughter as ‘ladies’. Nervous excitement filled the air while Maria opened the letter. Tears began to roll down her face. Maria’s life was at an all-time high. She had just been accepted to Stanford to study medicine. Maria raised her head to find her family anxiously searching her face for a clue. They saw the tears in her eyes, and then she began screaming and laughing. Beautiful noise spread throughout the house. Maria’s dedication to her studies meant so much to the Sanchez family. As evening approached, Maria was still on cloud nine. She started reminiscing some of the stories that were told to her when she was growing up. The stories provide explanations as to why her accomplishments were vitally important to her family.
