I would like to begin by stating that both Hobbes and Locke offered various arguments pertaining to the nature of man that I do agree with. It has been difficult for me to determine who I believe is more correct in their particular theories since each of them have made such convincing arguments. In most cases I would like to think that I tend to hold a more optimistic outlook especially when it comes to people, but realistically I believe that Hobbes’ theory of human nature makes more sense. Hobbes was a philosopher of seventeenth century, who believed that all men are at a natural state of war. He debated that when two men want the same thing and it is not possible for them to both have it, they will become enemies. I thought that Hobbes made a very interesting point when he argued that all men are created equal and that where one man is lacking, another will make up their shortcomings, and that in the end there is not a very big difference between people. To rule over men of this nature, Hobbes believed that the most successful form of government would be an absolute monarchy. He thought this was the best form of government because he believed there should only be one supreme authority. He could tolerate parliament, but he completely disagreed with a system of government in which power is shared.
