Exploration Of Punk Rock. Punk rock music was born in the early 1970's. Most people agree it was fathered in New York City from bands in the late 1960's. Bands such as "The Fugs" and "The Velvet Underground" were playing a style of music that was considered the earliest form of punk rock. The first actual bands to call themselves "punk bands" were probably "The New York Dolls", "The Talking Heads", "Richard Hell and the Voidoids", the "Stooges", and the "Ramones". These groups were the first punk rock groups, and a big influence on punk rock as a whole Early Punk Rock Bands The earliest punk rock bands were playing a style of music that combined the 1950's sound of a typical Chuck Berry song, such as "Maybeline", with a heavy dose of grinding, distorted guitars, forcefull drumming, and snarling, abrasive, abusive lyrics. This combination equaled "punk rock." The early punk bands dressed in torn shirts and ripped jeans, leather jackets, spiked jewelry, and wore their hair in spikey mohawks, spiked straight up, or in the uncombed style. This was the style of the early punk rockers. The Sex Pistols were a punk rock band that was probably the most important punk rock band during the birth and formation of punk rock. Many consider them to be the most important and influencial punk rock band ever. They formed as a band in 1976, when former New York Dolls manager Malcom McLaren noticed a few derelict kids hanging around his London area shop which he owned. He discovered that these kids were in a band that called themselves "The Swankers". The Swankers consisted of Steve Jones on bass and vocals, Paul Cook on the drums, and Wally Nightingale on guitar. McLaren offered to manage this group, and they disposed of Nightingale, who wasn't "punk" enough anyway, and switched Jones to guitar. What the new group needed now was a bass player, and a lead singer. They found their lead singer in a young punk by the name of John Lydon, who auditioned for the group by drunkenly singing to a song on a jukebox in a pub, and recristened him as Johnny Rotton, because of his rotting teeth and body odor. Glen Matlock filled the bassist position, but it wasn't long until another bassist by the name of Sid Vicious would come along and fill the hole left by Matlock after he left the band. The Sex Pistols went right to work attracting as many fans as they did enemies in their native England. Their records were different and weird, and England wasn't used to such an openly anti-government, anti-social band. Their records were deemed "too trashy" and were banned from stores. Their second single, "God Save the Queen" went to number two in the British pop charts, and caused the British government a heart palpitation. When their album "Never Mind the Bollocks: Here Come the Sex Pistols" went to number one in the British charts, it was banned by many stores.
