Acid rain begins with the production of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, which are produced from the burning of fossil fuel, such as oil, and coal. There are many other sources of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, but the burning of fossil fuel is the major source (“Acid Rain”).
