Have you or someone you know been affected by divorce? The answer is almost certainly yes. This is due to the current divorce rate. It is predicted that 42% of marriages will end in divorce. It is a frighteningly high percentage; however, there is an optimistic outlook for the future. The number is actually declining compared to past figures. Divorce rates peaked in the late 70’s and early 80’s with nearly one half of all marriages ending in divorce. Fortunately, there has been a slow decline in this figure. Nevertheless, compared to other major countries, the United States is by far the leader in divorces. There are many reasons people give for getting a divorce, and many factors play a substantial role in the road to this separation. In the next few minutes we will look at some of these causes. We will also examine the affect a divorce has on not only both of the adults involved, but also the children who are caught in the middle of the turmoil. Here are some quick facts about Missouri’s divorce rate as of the year 2000 (This is the newest statistic I could find). • In Missouri there were 4.7 divorces for every 1,000 people in 2000. • The divorce rate in Missouri peaked in 1979 at 5.7 divorces per 1000 people and has been going down slightly for the past two decades. • Despite this decline there were still 24, 980 divorces in the year 2000. • There were 22,511 children whose parents got divorced in Missouri in 2000. • 51% of all divorces in Missouri involve children. Although statistics vary from state to state, the national average is currently around 42%. The state with the lowest divorce rate is Massachusetts. Only 2.4 per 1000 people had been divorced in 1997.
