Ole Miss This expression is the nickname of the University of Mississippi, which became famous in the 1960 because of the fight for equal rights for blacks. In 1961, the application of James Meredith to the University of Mississippi caused a firestorm of protest. In spite of this strong protests, on October 2, 1962, James Meredith was the first African American accepted by the University of Mississippi. His attendance provoked riots. Because of the demonstrations he had to be escorted to class by U.S. marshals and troops. By allowing him to enter the University, the first step to stop segregation in educational institutions was made. Lt. Col. John H. Glenn Jr. was the first American to orbit earth three times in four hours and 55 minutes on February 20, 1962. The one-man Mercury missions developed hardware for safe spaceflight and return to Earth, and began to show how human beings would fare in space. From 1961 through 1963 the United States flew many test flights and six manned Mercury missions. Liston beats Patterson Floyd Patterson, one of the most successful boxers in history (from his first 36 profights he lost only one) was the youngest beavyweight champion when he beat Archie moore in 1956. He also was the first one to regain this title which he had lost to Sweden's Ingomar Johanson in a rematch 1960. He defended hes title successfully until losing it to Sonny Liston in 1962. Patterson continued fighting, but never won a title again. This fight, Patterson vs. Liston, was one of the greatest sporting events in this year.
