In the past years the emissions of diesel engines were discussed seriously. New de-velopments concerning the emissions of Diesel engines are highly effected by law. Critical point in this context is the emission of Particles and of Nitrogen Oxides which have to be reduced by 80% respectively 60% in order to the new statutes EURO 4 in 2005 and EURO 5 in 2008. This step cannot be taken only by motor measures. In this context the optimization of both particles and nitrogen oxides seems to be ex-tremely difficult, because they have conflictive effects on relevant combustion parameters. Nitrogen oxides for example can be reduced by an exhaust-gas recircu-lation system which results in an increased consumption of diesel fuel and in consequence to an increase of the particles emission.
