Colby Morgan American Lit Optional Check in Introduction to Lenses Lamb to the Slaughter From a Feminist Prospective The story Lamb to the Slaughter, by Roald Dahl strongly plays on gender roles. It tells the story of the murder of a husband, committed by the not so typical house wife. It then becomes even more complicated when the wife covers the murder up and isn’t suspected by the strong and naive male characters. The story also has the three- dimensional wife play off of the idea that she understands her perceived role in society and uses it to her advantage. Mary Maloney is the typical house wife. When we are introduced to her character she is sewing anticipating her husband coming home. At first it seems that she has no reason for living, accept for serving her husband. “Now and then she would glance up at the clock, but without anxiety, merely to please herself with the thought that each minute gone by made it nearer to the time when he would come”.
