Approximately 320 young people are diagnosed with leukemia each year, and my friend was amongst them. While growing up I have had many precious people come in and out my life. Until May 4, 2002 I have never had a special person gone forever. Her name was Marlene and she was my close friend, who taught me many things about the meaning of life. When she passed away it affected my life drastically and left me with a greater appreciation for life. Marlene was a beautiful young lady with a good heart. Up until she became sick with leukemia she lived her everyday life like a normal teenage girl, she went to school, went out with friends, and went shopping. Then one day I went to her house and she was sick. She thought she was sick because of a ride she had gone on at an amusement park with friends and family. Days and days went by without any improvement. Everyone then thought she had a cold or flu. Finally too much time went by and her parents took her to the hospital. In the hospital she took many test to find out what was wrong. All the results came back positive for leukemia. I was in shock to find this out. I never thought this would happen to somebody I knew.
