Leo Tolstoy once wrote, “ All happy families are like one another; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” This is the case in William Shakespeare’s King Lear. King Lear and his daughters, like many families, are unhappy. Land and false claims of love cause the family to separate. This family is unhappy because of Lear’s “blindness”, Goneril and Regan’s cruelty, and the disunity that occurs as a result.
Lear is not literally blind, but he is blind to Goneril and Regan’s false claims of love. ... ” (I,i ) Lear is blind because he is furious that she does not lie to him like Goneril and Regan have. ... ” (I,i) This irrational disowning of Cordelia proves how blind Lear is to true love and respect.
