A Management degree has candidly beckoned me as the most equitable career option from amongst a host of other vocations. Propelled by my keen interest to acquire a theoretical knowledge coupled with my creativity I hope to be a successful manager. I believe that I have the qualities to be a good manager. I am a creative person and often think in a contemplative way about various issues of practical importance. DNA AS AN ANALYTICAL TOOL The aspect of molecular patterns which seem to have been most underestimated in the consideration of biological phenomenon is that found in liquid crystals. (J. Needham) Liquid crystals are substances that flow as a liquid but maintains an ordered structure characteristic of a crystal. Bernal (1933) suggests that the living cell is actually a liquid crystal. Many biological structures are in the form of liquid crystalline polymers. The DNA double helix forms a liquid crystal polymer at low temperatures. Due to weak molecular forces liquid crystals respond to a variety of external stimuli - light, mechanical pressure, temperature, electric and magnetic fields and the chemical environment. Is it then possible to use these biological structures viz. DNA as an analytical and diagnostic tool in medicine? At low temperatures, the DNA forms a cholesteric-nematic liquid crystalline structure. The cholesteric-nematic liquid crystal exhibits optical properties. As the temperature increases they change colour going from reds to yellows, greens, blues and ultimately they become transparent. The DNA, in this state, can thus be used as a temperature sensor for continuous monitoring of skin temperature over extended areas. They can also be used to detect tumours by sudden change in the temperature of the malignant region.
