As I Lay Dying The Bundrens perceive Darl as a very unstable and mad individual, however in As I Lay Dying, it is Darl that William Faulkner uses to narrate most of the chapters. Madness is very much in the eye of the beholder and the family chooses to believe that Darl is mad for their own convenience and personal gain. The family is quick to pass judgment on Darl and decide he is insane, but it is the families behavior that makes them seem unstable. Although the family strives to fulfill Addie’s wish in burying her at Jefferson, the family secretly goes to Jefferson for their own personal gain. Anse wants new teeth, Dewey Dell wants an abortion, Jewel goes along for the ride, as long as he can ride his horse, which is more important to him then the family, Cash just wanted to build Addie her coffin, and Vardaman wants a train. Darl on the other hand, only joins the family on the trip to Jefferson to ensure that his mother’s suffering will finally end and that she will be put to rest.
