I. Introduction Thesis Statement: Aeneas’ struggles to fulfill his destiny are clearly represented by the statement “In life, a man has to learn to be strong in all the broken places.” cited from David Gemmell’s Wolf in Shadow. In these broken places, Aeneas was honed to be the man that he had to be, a man who would soon lead an empire that he himself had to fulfill. From each of these struggles, which I will elaborate on further, lessons were learned and a deeper understanding of life was attained. II. Body One of the many painful experiences a person could go through is to leave his homeland. Aeneas had to endure leaving Troy in that state of devastation. He had to be strong for his men especially when they were wandering across the ocean and unsure of where fate would take them. But there was no one to blame for the fall of Troy but that unholy rage that left them ignorant, from which they themselves have courted their own doom. From the following lines we could gain an understanding on how they yielded their own predicament: “Such was the art of perjured Sinon, so insidious, we trusted what he told”. (Lines 276-277, Book 2). In the shores of Carthage, these weary Trojans have found a temporary refuge. They saw a kingdom waiting to be established. Men everywhere were working and building structures. On the other hand, in this great city Aeneas met Dido, the ruler of the kingdom who received them ever so gratefully. A relationship blossomed between these two leaders. And eventually, Aeneas found himself telling Dido the story of the life he had left behind. His past life contained only half of the “broken places” that he had gone through. His life before leaving Troy was itself full of tragedy, particularly when he saw the king of Troy being massacred. It was certainly a heart-breaking incident. “This was the first time savage horror took me. I was astounded; as I saw the king gasping his life away beneath a ruthless Wound, there before me rose the effigy Of my dear father, just as old as Priam”. ( Lines 751-755) After all that have happened, he found himself leaving Troy for the benefit of saving his people somehow.
