The second attack in the Jaws extract builds up an immense amount of tension of tension from the opening of the scene. ... As well as comparing the understanding of the reader and the character very early on in the extract, Peter Benchly carries on to do so when he tells us, ‘The fish did not hear the sound, but rather register the sharp and jerky impulses emitted by the kicks. ... ’ The cause of this is, at first we think the shark will attack immediately because of the ‘impulses emitted by the kicks’ which will alert the sharks’ attention. ... ‘The fish was impelled to attack: if what was swallowed was digestible, that was food; if not it will later be regurgitated. ... ’ This occurs mostly at the end of the extract to add dramatic impact.
