The Salem Witches Trials
The most popular re-telling of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 comes from American
dramatist Arthur Miller. The Crucible, first performed on Broadway in January 1953,
dramatized the events that shook the small hamlet of Salem Village in the late 17th
century. ...
As popular as The Crucible became, it wasn’t really an accurate picture of what
happened in Salem Village in 1692. ... What is known for sure is the end result of
their accusations of witchcraft: 19 people were hanged ; one man died from being
pressed to death for refusing to plead guilty or innocent at his trial; five more people,
including an unnamed infant, died in jail; and over 150 people were time either accused
or jailed for being a witch or wizard.
