A Separate Peace, written by John Knowles takes place in 1942 and tells the story of young men attending a private school just before World War II starts. ... The story’s main focus is the external conflict of the war about to happen and the internal conflict of the war inside of Gene and how he achieves his “separate peace”. Gene struggles to find peace within himself and tries different actions including comparing himself with Finny and making their friendship a rivalry. Another way Gene tries to achieve peace is by living through Finny and becoming a part of him. ... Gene states that everyone has an enemy to confront and there are many different ways to find peace within yourself. ... ” p77 Gene hopes to find peace as he gives more of himself over to Finny and his dreams. ...
