Exploiting the resource The Guitar is a six stringed instrument. The strings are usually tuned to E,A,D,G,B,E. the guitar is played by holding down different strings on different frets and strumming or finger picking. For other effects you can do hammering and sliding. Strumming is usually done with a plectrum but can be done without one. You play all the strings at once except for a few chords where you sometimes have to mute a string. Finger picking is done without a plectrum and is where you pick one or two strings at a time, this gives you a nice smoother sound. Using your fingers instead of a pick opens up a whole new world of guitar sound. You are not being limited to a strum. Being able to highlight individual notes, instead of the whole chord. Being able to play melodies, and not just accompaniments. All of this is possible with finger picking. A hammer-on is done by first picking a note (open or fretted), then firmly and quickly planting a left hand finger on a different note (fret). This gives you a quick sharp sound. Sliding is usually done with a metal bar that you fit on a finger, then by sliding that finger up and down the fret board you are given a high pitched soft noise.
