Analysis of The Dead

... James Joyce explores these ideas in his classic short story “The Dead”. ... Gabriel feels as though he has become one of the “the dead”. This is illustrated when the narrator states, "His soul had approached that region where dwell the vast hosts of the dead" (page 224).
The snow, which was portrayed, to fall upon "all the living and the dead" displays a portion of irony in the story where we are isolated and often without knowledge of the innermost feelings and thoughts of those we are intimate with. "His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead" He also thinks about how it is covering the grave of Michael Furey, as well as all the other deceased humans that have ever existed and is reminded that the same fate awaits all beings. ... “The dead” represents the living. It displays how people can go on with their daily lives with bits and pieces of them dead inside. ... She closed off a majority of her emotions, they were dead and buried when his body descended into the earth.
