Responsibilities to Self or Children? Everyday in the world millions of children are abandoned. This is a horrible thing for a child to go through, and will usually leave a permanent emptiness within. At a very young age, a child usually develops closeness to their mother, and taking away that relationship can be devastating. In the book A Doll’s House, by Henrik Ibsen, Nora is not treated fairly by her husband, so she makes the hard decision to leave. This is a very justified action, but the fact that she also left behind defenseless children is another matter entirely. Nora’s responsibilities to her children should always overcome those to herself. For her whole life Nora was treated like a child. First by her father, and then in turn by her husband Torvold. She finally decides that she can take no more, and leaves her entire family. It is understandable that Nora would wish to leave her husband, after the way he has been treating her, but she has not considered the well-being of her children.
