A Nation at Risk is an interesting look at education. The idea of wanting to improve education is highly important. I seriously looked at the idea of our nation entering an “information age.” This report that was written in 1983 had no idea of what that coined phrase would come to represent. Our nation today lives within technology. Students will be expected to utilize all types of technology to earn a college degree as well as fulfill a job opportunity. Schools are expected to teach this technology age beginning in the early years through high school. These technology skills are to be incorporated on top of the basic skills of reading, math, science, social studies, etc. Whose responsibility is it to teach the teachers this new idea? Where should the funding come from to create a learning environment? What priority does technology reach within a school day? All of these questions need to be answered before we send our future students out the door after graduation. I found that the findings section of the report drew most of my attention. As a teacher of fifth grade, I struggle with the concept of how much homework is adequate for my students.
