I contend: My personal dream is no longer possible. Has it ever been possible? If so: What are dreams and are our dreams manipulated? To understand the influence of advertisement, we need to understand what a dream is. As Cinderella once sang “a dream is a wish your heart makes.” Dreams are wishes for personal achievements, wishes for desires or gains. Dreams are very personal. But our dreams are manipulated so that our dreams are de-personalized, and made public. They are manipulated in the sense that the companies want the public to have the same dream, the same desire for gain or achievement. They are manipulating in a sense that they tell us what to dream, thereby doing what God cannot, toy with free will. Advertisement exists in many forms. An add in the paper, a show on the TV, a big poster in the train station, a huge sign at the mall, a colourful picture in a window-shop. The purpose of advertising is to draw the attention of people on a particular product. Once it has gotten the attention, it tries to make the public buy this particular product. Advertisement is very negative because it de-personalizes dreams. An add of an abnormally skinny, stick insect, woman wearing the dress your supposed to buy. Subconsciously you think that if you buy and wear that dress you’ll look as beautiful as that woman, which makes you start wondering if you look good enough, like that woman in the add.
