WEATHERFORD - A 35-year-old associate professor with the Texas A&M Health Science Center in Houston was arrested in the criminal solicitation of a minor after he drove to Weatherford to have a sexual encounter with someone he believed to be a 13-year-old girl (Bradford 1). INDEPENDENCE – A former city councilman will be sentenced next month after an Ohio judge convicted him of solicitation (“Former Councilman” 1). LaPorte - “On September 3rd., LaPorte Police Detective Adam Klimczak was in a Chat room under the Alias “Amy” when he received a private message. Following two days of key boarding exchanges, police said a man who identified himself only as a “26-year old male from New Carlisle” expressed an interest in having sex. The suspect made more references to sex despite being informed on several occasions the so-called girl was only 13, the police said” (Maddux 1). This is the type of monsters lurking out in Cyberspace, just waiting for one of our children to logon to a chat room, where they can befriend them, and then move in to infringe on their vulnerability and violate their trust. This kind of crime is on the uprise. The growth of technology has changed our lives dramatically. Today, computers are prevalent in businesses, homes, schools, libraries, and even airports. The World Wide Web provides instant access to news, reference information, shopping, banking, stock trading, auctions, and travel information and reservations. People routinely use the Internet to take college courses, play games, listen to music, and view videos. Chat rooms and e-mails are now replacing telephones as our favorite means of long-distance communication (Gregory 3). Unfortunately, criminals are also using modern technology to prey on innocent victims. Computers and the Internet have made the predator’s job easier. Historically, child predators found their victims in public places where children tend to gather at schoolyards, playgrounds and shopping malls (Gregory 4). With so many children online today, the Internet provides predators a new place (cyberspace) to target children for criminal acts. This approach eliminates many of the risks predators face when making contact in person.
