FREE SPEECH Ayeshah Ashraf 97192255 PHIL 324 -Assignment Three In Mills writings, he makes a very good point that is not always thought of when discussing free speech. On the surface free speech seems to be a liberty that anyone should have, right? Wrong. I think that there should be some limitations on what can and cannot be said or printed during the execution of free speech. It is terrible to have to worry about people using their right to free speech to distribute material that is hateful or even hurtful. As Mill discusses in his writings, limitations need to be put on what can’t be said or printed but these limitations are very few. This is because of a question that arises of whether individuals are really even given free speech then. According to Mill, individuals are free to say whatever they want as long as they do not hurt others. To me, this is not enough of a limitation and much more regulations are needed to control the limits to which on can exercise their free speech. I see some problems with Mills theory because there is still very much harm that can be done if anyone is allowed to exercise their free speech gratned the tiny limitations that he has mentioned. This is where the issue of morality then comes into play. For instance, many actions can have harmful results that are not always clear right away. Placing restrictions on free speech although it seems to be a solution is not. From it, then stems another issue, which is who, should be the one to place these restrictions. Who is the one that will decide what is appropriate and what is not. Who is the one that is able to decide for all of society what is, and isn’t included in the right to freedom of expression. Mill believes that there is “a limit to the legitimate interference of collective opinion with individual independence. But who is to say what these limitations are. This is somewhat of a circular question. Maybe throughout this paper I will be able to determine an answer. This question is a real moral dilemma. It is ethics that makes some forms of free speech wrong or for that matter even right.
