INTRODUCTION Advanced Manufacturing Technology or AMT as it is commonly known as, is a collective term used to describe the new technology in manufacturing, which utilises the power of many new technologies and particularly computers. The availability of computer power has had a significant impact on manufacturing. It led to the development of CNC technology, Robotics; computer controlled handling devices, FMS among other things that have increased the accuracy, flexibility of the manufacturing process. It has also lead to the integration of the product development and manufacturing engineering functions through the use of IT technology, which has had considerable impact on manufacturing management in general. One area where the computer technology is particularly important is automation. Most of the manufacturing automation systems implemented today make use of computers. Although automation preceded computer technology, it is computer power that made automation flexible and more effective in applications other than mass production. There is a consensus among experts that a key success factor in AMT is its implementation. This should not be confused with installation of equipment because it involves organisational changes in companies as well as technological change.
