Interview With Jackie Robinson Did you experience much in the way of racial discrimination growing up? Had anything changed when you started to play ball? Well I grew up in Pasadena, California. Now you have to remember that this was in the 1920’s so there was a lot of discrimination. And especially because my family and me were living in the south racist’s were even more unashamed and humiliating. For instance, I could not swim in the YMCA pool, except on certain days for Negroes. I experienced a lot of discrimination but you know what they say: what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. So I thank those people for helping make me the person I am today. How did you and Rachael Robinson first meet? What was your first impression of her? I was a senior at UCLA and she was a freshman.
