... The production of Milos Forman’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is no different. Critics David Denby and Molly Haskell have diverging viewpoints when it comes to this movie. In Haskell’s article, Nicholson’s Ironic Portrayal of McMurphy, she discusses the more positive aspects of the film whereas in Denby’s article, An Adolescent Fantasy, he accounts for the film’s flaws. By examining the two articles, it is evident that Nicholson’s Ironic Portrayal of McMurphy is a justification of the arguments Denby makes in An Adolescent Fantasy.
One argument Denby makes is that the film breeds hatred towards women, which Haskell justifies by implying he is not looking at the whole picture. According to Denby, the lead female character has been portrayed as an utterly evil monster, which can only promote hatred. ... Although Nurse Ratched may be portrayed as a power-hungry monster, Haskell’s interpretation allows the audience to see where she is coming from. ... In Denby’s opinion, Forman is striving for comedy at the expense of the mentally challenged.
