Hester Prynne is a passionate woman who is involved in an affair between two men. In the novel, The Scarlet Letter written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hester is sent to America by her husband, Roger Chillingworth. She does not hear from Chillingworth for over two years. Therefore, Hester had an affair with Arthur Dimmesdale. Hester is the wearer of a patch of fabric in the shape of an “A,” which signifies as an “adulterer.” As a strong and passionate woman, Hester endures years of shame and scorn. She is alienated from the rest of the community, and becomes contemplative. By knowing this information, the question comes to mind if Hester was a victim of circumstance, or if she was responsible for the choice she made. Although Hester may seem like a victim of circumstance, factors led Hester to be responsible for the choice she made.
