... During the war, there were many battles, but the battle I am going to talk about in this paper is the battle that took place in Atlanta. This battle is one the most remembered battles of the Civil War. In the paper, I am going to mention which generals were responsible for the battle, the location of where the battle took place and the damage it caused to the city of Atlanta and its surrounding areas.
The general that was involved with the battle of Atlanta from the Union army was William Grant. William Grant is better recognized by his battles in the south such as the Battle of Atlanta and Sherman’s March to the Sea (Gallagher, 2002, pg. ... Besides General Sherman, there was Confederate General Joseph Johnston he was the general who held off Union soldiers at Kennesaw Mountain, but he was unsuccessful with the Atlanta battle. ... He replaced Johnston right before the war of Atlanta.
Atlanta was one of the key cities of the Confederate States of America. In Atlanta, was the railroad and also army supply houses if Sherman took of Atlanta this would be a major win for the Union and a large loss for the Confederates. To begin with, before Sherman could get through to Atlanta, he would have to go through the mountains of Georgia. One the war before he could get to Atlanta was the war at Kennesaw Mountain. This battle involved General Sherman, and General Johnston. ... Event though Sherman had lost the battle, Sherman did not stop. As the battles went on, Johnston was still winning, but soon Sherman tried flanking or bordering techniques which caused Johnston to move towards the Chattahoochee River and closer to Atlanta which was his goal which was only five miles away at Peachtree Creek (Golden, 1994, pg. ... Before Sherman reached Atlanta, there was the battle of Peachtree Creek. ...
However, on the other side of the battle lines, General Johnston was replaced by General John Hood by the president of the Confederacy Jefferson Davis (The Battle of Atlanta).
