In my opinion, I believe that the Reconstruction process was a failure. ... Under different circumstances, for instance, if President Lincoln had not been assassinated, I think the Reconstruction process would have been more successful. Overall I believe it was the internal issues within the government that caused Reconstruction to be a failure.
The first issue in the failure of the Reconstruction plan was the argument over Lincoln’s 10 percent plan and Congress’s Wade-Davis bill. If the federal government cannot even agree on a plan for reconstruction, how is the overall process going to successful? ... When Lincoln refused to sign the bill, the controversy over Reconstruction began to increase.
