Summary A place called Hobbiton had a large round hill that had many small round doors. All the one-story houses had little people called hobbits. Hobbits are short, fat, and beardless, with hairy hands and feet. They don’t wear shoes because their feet grow natural leathery soles. The story focuses on one particular hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. One morning after Bilbo was done with breakfast he was outside smoking his long wooden pipe. When along came an elderly looking man with a staff, named Gandalf. Gandalf was very well known to many people and had quite an impressive reputation with all the adventurous journeys he made. Bilbo didn’t recognize Gandalf at first because it’s been such a long time since they last met. Bilbo recognized Gandalf and remembered all great tales he shared with Bilbo when he was in his younger days. He invited him in for tea but Gandalf refused and said he would come back tomorrow. The following day Bilbo forgot about his tea appointment with Gandalf. The doorbell rang but it wasn’t Gandalf at all but instead it was a little dwarf. One dwarf after another they entered into Bilbo’s house and Gandalf was the last to come in. Before Bilbo knew it there were 15 people in his house (including himself) eating his food and drinking his tea. There was one dwarf that was particularly important. His name was Thorin Oakenshield. He was the son of Thrain, who was the son Thror, the last great ruler of Lonely Mountain before the dragon came. Before Bilbo knew it, he was on a long journey to Lonely Mountain to help Thorin regain Lonely Mountain and all of its riches from the evil dragon Smaug. The group saw a small orange fire at nightfall. They went towards the bright flames but before they knew it, stinky little bags came over them and they were caught by trolls. Gandalf was lucky enough to get away. Gandalf rescues the dwarfs and Bilbo by tricking the three trolls. He instigates a fight amongst themselves to make them turn into stones when the sun came up. The dwarfs were released and stumbled into the troll’s camp and ate all their food.
