... However, today there are many single parent homes in America, especially among Black people. The absence of Black fathers was statistically shown in the 2000 census where almost fifty percent of Black homes were headed by women(Dixon). Where is the African American father, and how does his absence affect his children? As a result of growing up without a father figure, African American males often turn to criminal activity, and do not value the importance of their role as a father, both of which create a cycle that contributes to the break down of the African American family. In 1990 sixty-one percent of all incarcerated African American males grew up without fathers (Why Black Men). ... For the young African American male the father is the first male hero, or role model. ... Henceforth, with the absence of a father, young males have to seek role model outside of the home. ... Thus, many young black males resort to criminal activity before the age of twenty. ... However, while there are many other factors that contribute to young African American males turning to illegal activity, the absence the father figure as a role model is an important factor. If the African American father would remain in the home as a positive father giving guidance and direction, they could possibly prevent young African American males from engaging in criminal activity.
