This paper is on the definition of death, ranging from death in the traditional sense, death of the body, and brain death or the cessation of brain function. Even though there is a difference of opinions amongst physicians and legislators whether brain death is the same as death and if death of the brain is necessarily the same as death of the body or death in the traditional sense. It is my opinion that the whole brain death when all function of the brain stops including the brain stem is synonymous with death and death of the body.
Death has occurred when all vital organs simultaneously stop functioning and this is generally the case when a person is brain dead, there is an irreversible cessation of the functions of the entire brain. If the entire brain is dead there is no function of any other vital organs of the body hence death of the body.
Death in a Traditional Sense
Death in a traditional sense is the cessation of an individual’s life when his heart and lungs have permanently ceased to function and there is nothing medically possible can be done to repair them or causing them to start functioning again.
