The word karma originates from Sanskrit and is typically found in the Buddhist and Hindu belief systems. In Buddhism, the law of karma states “for every event that occurs, there will follow another event whose existence was caused by the first, and this second event will be pleasant or unpleasant according as its cause was skillful or unskillful. ... In Buddhist teaching, this act of hostility is called karma and is also considered to be unskillful. ... The Buddhists believe so strongly in the idea of karma, that they think it even affects the soul after death. ... Therefore, a fully ethical or skillful person is considered to have good karma and a perfect soul, but those who lives their lives unethically and unskillfully may not achieve perfection of the soul for several incarnations. Obviously, the Buddhists take the law of karma as a very spiritual and mystical concept.
In our society, karma is used a little more loosely than in Buddhist culture, but it still holds the same idea.
