Suicide has always existed in human society. An estimated 500,000 people around the world commit suicide every year. Suicide is just as potent a killer as war and disease. Although people from all age group, ethnicity, sex, and social class are vulnerable to suicide, appalling records show that the age of those who commit suicide seems to be gradually getting lower. What causes the young people to kill themselves? Where does the problem lie? Certain social and psychological factors may lead to teenage suicide. The first major cause of teenage suicide can be attributed to the mentality held by the person who commits suicide. People prone to suicide tend to share certain characteristics: they are easily upset, unstable, anxious, depressive, and poor at adjusting. Such people are more likely to contemplate on the idea of suicide. They do not commit suicide inevitably, but are more likely than others to resort to suicide under particular kinds of external pressure.
