Summary and Analysis 1. Two main characters (protagonists) introduced – Brian and Alex. Initial setting (first place) and background is Motherwell. We (the audience/reader) are given background information. It was once an industrial town. The majority of the population worked in the steel factories. ‘And now…’ it is no longer a thriving place with opportunities. Alex and Brian are sarcastic and mock Motherwell, ‘The Bondi Beach of Lanarkshire/Twenty five miles from the fucking sea’. Bondi beach is a beautiful beach in Australia famous for it’s surfing. Australia is not only geographically opposite to Scotland - the other side of the world – but opposite in way of life and culture. The underlying tone of this first scene suggests that the characters are scathing and negative about Motherwell. 2. Humour. The ‘Kid’ is described by the play-write as ‘thirteen going on forty’. This tells us this character is streetwise and lacks the innocence you might expect a ‘kid’ to have. The ‘kid’ uses colloquial language (slang) such as ‘Chill man.’ And ‘Cool the beans, pal’.
