The men in the novel, One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, by Ken Kesey, have mental and emotional issues where they take insanity to a different level. Unable to make their own decisions, the men rely on others for the guidance. They aren’t sure of themselves; so they continue to stay in the facility, because they need someone else to tell them what they want. The men need the attention that the facility provides, so they can feel comfortable with themselves to a certain extent. Although the men claim to be insane; they really are just a group of men scared of their future. The men in the facility are unable to make their own decisions; they’d rather have it all bottled up inside. Chief Bromden, the narrator of the book, says he’s “been silent so long now it’s gonna roar out of [him] like floodwaters”, and that he doesn’t have a clear mind thinking about it (13). The men aren’t comfortable with sharing their feelings so they stay in the mental institution because it’s their way of hiding from the truth. They are scared of what will come out of their future if they are left to fend for themselves.
