Allan Bloom once said, “Education is the movement from darkness to light.” It is within the light that we are finally able to see the truth and reality of all situations. In William Shakespeare’s King Lear, the letters that are used to correspond between different characters act as the light for the readers of the play (Burke 11). What is the purpose of the letters in King Lear (Bloom 22)? ... From these letters, however, light can be shown in that they bring forth the true characteristics of the characters. Although the letters are often overlooked, they reveal much about the characters and by doing this, play a very vital role in the play. One can see the letters showing characters’ loyalty or lack there of in the revelations about Edmund, Goneril, and Cordelia that stem from reading the letters. ... Although this can obviously be seen many times throughout the play, it is within this letter that the readers can fully recognize Edmund’s plan and his valid feelings towards his father. Long explains this when he says, “The letters represent truth and honesty in a world of lies and confusion. ... It is within this letter and the situation of Edmund trying to convince Gloucester that Edgar is against him that readers are fully able to see Edmund’s true side without having to worry about being fooled by Edmund‘s tricks as everyone else in the play is. Without the validity that the letters bring about, the readers themselves would even find themselves confused over who to believe (Burke 15). ... Goneril’s real plans are finally brought out within the letters and readers are able to fully comprehend exactly what she is trying to do (Long 33).
