4a) There are many problems in assessing the influences religion has on society as it is near impossible to measure an individuals spirituality as they are all so different. Also, the word religion is indefinable therefore making it difficult to assess what influences it has. 4b) Text A is written from a functionalist’s perspective as it takes a positive approach top religion in relation to the state and individuals. Conversely, Marxists and Feminists would take a conflicting approach on religion. Functionalists such as Durkheim would argue that religion is the glue within society that creates social solidarity. Marxists claim that religion is a tool of capitalism and a justification of social order. They would argue that religion is an illusion created by exploitation and oppression. The illusions created by religion reinforce the domination of the ruling class by preventing any thought of over throwing the system. Like Marxists, Feminists also believe that religion has a negative impact, especially upon women. Feminists argue that religion justifies male domination over females and is not based upon equality. In modern day society, for example France, views religion as being dysfunctional by taking the attention from the state.
