The tone of 1984 is best described as grim and miserable. This is the mood of the entire novel. Nothing ever improves, or even looks like it is going to improve. Although it is supposed to make you think, rather than just make you depressed, it does both. The tone is especially set through the use of the setting, the solemn demeanor of the characters, and the political ideology described throughout the entire book. One of the main ways that George Orwell sets the tone of 1984 is through the setting. Everything is described as dingy and broken, as seen when Winston describes Victory Mansions. The streets are full of littered propaganda, and the houses are all falling down.
