The movie What’s Eating Gilbert Grape focuses on Gilbert Grape’s struggle to find time for his own private life amidst all of his family obligations. Gilbert is the oldest son in the Grape family and is responsible for taking care of everyone, especially his eighteen-year-old brother Arnie, who has autism and requires constant attention. ... Gilbert falls in love with Becky and adds another stressor to his life because he is forced to sacrifice some of his family responsibilities in order to spend time with Becky. The climax of the story is the death of Gilbert’s mother which frees each family member from their obligation to stay at home and enables them to pursue their own dreams and goals.
Though it is never clearly stated in the movie, Arnie Grape has autism. In order to be diagnosed with autism, an individual must have six or more symptoms from three diagnostic subgroups, and these symptoms must be documented before the individual is three years old. ...
