Cheerleading History On evening in November of 1898, midway through the first half of a Minnesota football game, a man known as Johnny Campbell jumped down from the stands and started yelling "Rah, Rah, Rah! Sku-u-mar, Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity, Minn-e-So-Tah!" to the players and then to the spectators in the stands. He alone started a new American tradition, that later evolved from yell leaders into cheerleading. Cheerleading has developed tremendously overtime into a sport that involves strength, endurance, and a lot of spirit. How has cheerleading become so popular since 1898? Well from 1898 till the early 1920’s cheerleading was a male sport. And males continued to be the e dominant sex until the 1940’s, when all the men went to war. At that time cheerleading became a female dominated sport. The first professional cheerleading squad was the Baltimore Colts. When the men returned from war they tumbled while girls entertained the crowds with dancing, later leading to the ever-popular dance teams of today.
