... Hawaiian myths say she lives in the volcano of Kilauea. ... Kilauea is a small volcano in comparison to the other volcanoes in its area, but it is possibly the most active volcano in the entire world. ...
The discovery of Kilauea took many years after originally seeing it. For many years, Kilauea was thought to be a small satellite of Mauna Loa. Geologist did not think Kilauea was a separate volcano from Mauna Loa because it is so small, and it is not easily noticed to be separate from Mauna Loa. But, research over the past few decades has proved that Kilauea is its own volcano. Kilauea has its own “magma plumbing” system which reaches upward toward the surface from sixty kilometers below Earth’s surface. Kilauea researchers had to do a lot of research on Kilauea for many years, after they discovered it was a separate volcano from Mauna Loa, because it is very complex.
There are many small details about Kilauea even though it is so small. Kilauea is located on the island of Hawaii, on the eastern slope of Mauna Loa. Kilauea is the southeastern most volcano on the large island- Hawaii. ... Kilauea is one thousand, two hundred seventy-seven meters above sea level. Kilauea’s area is one thousand, four hundred thirty square kilometers, which is thirteen and seven tenths percent of Hawaii. The volume of Kilauea is twenty-five thousand to thirty-five thousand cubic kilometers. ... Nearly ninety percent of Kilauea’s surface is covered with lava older than one thousand, one hundred years old, which is hard to believe since it is Hawaii’s youngest (Pough 81). When Kilauea began to form isn’t known exactly for sure. ...
Kilauea’s caldera is two and five tenths miles long, two miles wide, on hundred sixty-five meters deep at its deepest point, and it’s highest rim is four thousand, ninety feet above sea level.
